HISTORY OF RAINEY
The story of Rainey Street stretches back to 1884, when 16 acres along the Colorado River were divided into residential lots. Over the years, modest bungalows rose up, filled with craftsmen, tradesmen, and working families whose everyday lives shaped the neighborhood’s character and charm.

1884 – FOUNDATIONS
Cattle baron Jesse Driskill and veteran Frank Rainey subdivide 16 acres along the Colorado River.
Bungalow-style homes begin to define the neighborhood’s character.
1935 – THE FLOOD
A devastating flood destroys many homes.
Families rebuild, and Rainey continues as a modest residential community.

1950s – A HISPANIC NEIGHBORHOOD
The district become predominantly Hispanic.
Families thrive, but the building of Interstate 35 cuts Rainey off from East Austin, creating isolation.

1970s – DECLINE
Many homes on Rainey fall into disrepair and the street becomes a quiet, overlooked part of Austin.
1985 – HISTORIC RECOGNITION
Rainey Street is added to the National Register of Historic Places. The designation preserves its bungalows and cultural heritage.
2004-2005 – ZONING SHIFT
The City of Austin rezoned the residential neighborhood of Rainey Street to the Central Business District.
Historic cottages begin transforming into bars, restaurants, and music venues.

2010s – REINVENTION
Rainey becomes known for its bungalow bars and eclectic nightlife.
Food trucks, live music, and outdoor patios turn the district into one of Austin's most vibrant areas.
2015 – A NEW ANCHOR
Hotel Van Zandt opens, blending luxury with Rainey’s lively energy.
